Win a Colouring Book!!

Hello Awesome Peeps!!

I’m really excited to announce that Awesome People’s first colouring book is going to print! This colouring book is incredibly important to me for two very important reasons. The first reason is learning; I love to learn and this endeavour is giving me a history lesson that school never could. The second reason is far more personal.

When I was a kid, I remember asking my dad why there were so many more male singers than female. I was about 10 years old so it would have been 1977. At the time some of the singers I was listening to on the radio were Linda Ronstadt, Barbra Streisand, Donna Summer, Diana Ross and Carly Simon.

He looked at me with a confused look, and I knew he didn't really know the answer but he said because male singers had stronger voices.  Well, that didn't sit right with me. This was my dad telling me something that didn’t feel correct, yet I knew he wasn't trying to lie to me. Still, he wasn't telling the truth, just look at Donna Summer, she can outsing any man!!

Little did I know this would plant a seed for later in my life. Women's rights were at the forefront of my 20’s and have now resurfaced. Michelle Obama is this month's colouring book illustration and there is a very big reason she is in the colouring book. She is a force to be reckoned with! The first African American first lady, she is brilliant, educated and a symbol of strength. To me she is the all American Woman. I wanted to make her illustration reflect this, and that is why I chose the wonder woman pose and American iconography.

Women make up 50% of the population yet we are not represented 50% of the time. I want to change this. I don't ever want any little girl to grow up and feel she can't follow her dreams simply because she’s a girl. I felt this my whole life and it makes me angry, so I've used this energy to create a colouring book. Lots has changed over the past 30 years, and I’m very proud to have been a part of that, but I'm determined to make more of a difference, even if it is one crayon at a time!!!

CIRCLE OF INFLUENCE, ALONE ONE CAN BE AND TWO TONE TESSIE.

This month's podcast is with Claire Keys. Her interview is so great in so many ways!! Claire is fun, inspiring and has the best accent. Born and raised in Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe, Claire grew up in and out of convent/boarding schools since the age of two. They were Catholic of course and run by very strict nuns! YIKES!! Thanks for being awesome, THANKS for entering the contest!
